Yoriiye's eldest son, Ichiman, the natural heir, was only three yearsold, and Yoritomo's second son, Sanetomo, was in his eleventh year. Finally, in 1703, he was appointed daimyo of Kaiprovince and came into the enjoyment of a total income of 150,000koku. It reduced to ashes the Imperial palace, Nijo Castle,220 Shinto shrines, 128 Buddhist temples, and 183,000 houses. The vices spread, and in the complex of factors that led tothe downfall of the Bakufu, the ultimate ascendancy of Kyoto's socialstandards in Kamakura must probably be regarded as the mostimportant.
